How Nigeria Performed after 24 Games
Jighere Wellington lost the chance of playing the (best of 5) final rounds after he lost his 24th game. He played against Nigel Richards in a game that started turning awry on move 7 when Nigel played (O)UTSMELL (his second) bingo of the game. Jighere’s challenge of the word cost him 5 points trailing 132 – 217.
He had another setback on move 15 (scores then was 219-338) when he attempted PENCILS (his tiles were CLIPSNE), hooking the S under Nigel’s earlier CAERUle (his first move and a bingo), to form PENCILS (CAERUlE)S. Nigel challenges off the word (CAERULES is not a valid word) and had a smooth ride till the end of the game. Nigel will take a shot at the top spot against Ganesh Asirvatham of Malaysia tonite in a round of 5 finals. Jighere finishes in the third position, the best in Nigeria’s (and Africa’s) participation in the World Scrabble Championships.
