Emmanuel Umujose wins 2nd GA International Classics
He has a slight frame, stutters a little, but he overcame 45 other players in the masters category to become the champion of the second Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics after 14 games. Emmanuel Umujose may be the current world scrabble 9th best, but in the Nigeria Scrabble circuit which has little respect for the laurels you’ve won, he had to dig deep to defeat the current world rank 3, Jighere Wellington by 16 points on table 1 in the final game of the KOH rounds.
Umujose won 11 games (mar 762) to win his first tournament ever in or outside the country.

In an interview with NigeriaScrabble.com after his victory, Umujose who was visibly elated said he was happy to finally win a National Scrabble tournament. “It’s long overdue” he said. Asked who was his toughest opponent, he said “Against Dennis Ikekeregor, (round 13) I won by 1 point!” Dennis Ikekeregor took the second position while Jighere Wellington placed third.
The Opens and Veterans
In the Opens division after 12 games, Akpome Oghenemere placed first with 10 wins (mar +901), while Tima Eneware and Edema Bobor placed second and third respectively. Veteran Okoridem Bob placed first in the veteran category (for players above 55 years) with 6 points (mar +444) after 7 games. Alh. Lanre Agoro placed second with 6 points (mar +377), with Mr. Segun Adegbenro taking the third position (5 points, +355).

Awaiting the 3rd GA Classics
After the games, the host His Excellency Obot Godswill Akpabio, Governor of Akwa-Ibom state and Skye Bank who are co-partners in the sponsorship of the event, hosted players and officials to a beautiful banquet dinner. Entertainment was provided by stand-up comedians, musicians and Akwa-Ibom cultural dance display.
The Governor, himself a strong Scrabble player promised to sustain the event annually and implored for greater number of participants from outside Nigeria at the next edition. NSF president, Chief Toke Aka thanked the governor for his support in uplifting the game of Scrabble in Nigeria. The Governor later presented gifts to individuals who have contributed to the growth of the game in Akwa-Ibom state and Nigeria.
Personalities like veteran sports journalist Paul Bassey, sports buff and owner of Sportshaq, Mr Dudu Orumen, first NSF President, Gen. Gold Eburu (rtd), top Akwa-Ibom Goverment officials graced the occassion. The governor later took photographs with the prize-winners of the tournament.
