The first round of games of the Africa Scrabble Championship 2006 started about 30 minutes ago at the Sharon Ultimate Hotel Abuja. The tournament is being directed by Larry Ojoko of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation.
The first round pairing pits Nigeria's Dennis Ikekeregor, the defending champion with Chris Mensah of Ghana on table 1 (one). Former African champion Femi Awowade of Nigeria is slugging it out with Shemouna Suleiman of Ghana while Patrick Litunya of Kenya is playing the first round against Tayo Saheed of Nigeria.
Wenya Akinyi of Kenya who is arguably the most experienced female player in Africa is playing Sunday Oshodi of Nigeria while Nigeria's top female player Tuoyo Mayuku is playing Toyo Kitua of Tanzania.
